Penguin Habitat

Where Penguins Live

NO penguins live by the North Pole.  Polar bears do, but not penguins. All penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere, and many penguins live on the very cold  continent of Antarctica (the South Pole).  The Emperor penguin and the Adelie penguins live in Antarctica all year long.

Some others move to warmer waters in the winter.
Penguins are also found on the southern coasts of Australia, New Zealand, and Africa, and the western coast of South America.

Penguins spend most of their time in the water.  They come ashore to lay eggs and take care of their young when the eggs hatch.

Penguins can survive the very cold temperatures because they have three layers of feathers.  The feathers are very dense (thick and close together) and they make a waterproof covering for the penguins.  Penguins also have a thick layer of fat under their skin to insulate them from the cold.
