Penguins and Other Birds

How They are Alike and Different

Penguins are birds and are just like other birds in many ways:

- they have two legs and two wings

- they have beaks and no teeth

- their bodies are covered with feathers

- they hatch from eggs

- they are fed by their parents when they are very young;

But penguins are different from most birds because:

- they do not fly, they swim

- their bones are not hollow

- their feathers are more dense (thick and close together) and make a waterproof covering for their bodies

- they walk upright
