Penguin Enemies

Who would want to have penguin for dinner? A shark would.  A whale would, too.  Leopard seals and Elephant seals prey on penguins - they swim close to the edge of the ice and wait for the penguins to dive into the water.

There are three birds that prey on penguins by stealing their eggs and snatching the young chicks.  These birds are the Skuas, the Caracaras, and the Sheathbills.

Do you think the penguins look dressed up in their black and white suits?  Well, the suits are not for looking good, they are for protection.

Their black backs make them hard to see as they swim.  The seals swimming around in the water above them look down and only see black in the dark water.  Their white bellies make them hard to see for any animal who is deeper in the water and looking up.

Penguins can use their strong wing flippers to push themselves almost straight out of the water and onto the edge of the ice.  That skill comes in handy if a seal is chasing!

They can also swim very fast in circles at the edge of the ice and make a lot of bubbles.  The bubbles make it hard for the seal to see them as the penguins get ready to leap from the water.
